10 Fall and Halloween-Inspired Quilt Patterns

With the kids going back to school over the coming weeks and that distinct crisp feeling in the air, it's a sure sign that fall and Halloween are just around the corner.

So what better time than now to get ready with some fun Fall and Halloween-inspired quilting projects?

Here are 7 projects you could do in a weekend, and 3 that will take a little longer:

Scrappy Apple Pillow (with Pumpkin and Tree variations)

This Scrappy Pillow started out as an apple, but then I got to playing around with it and turned it into both a pumpkin and a tree. The tutorial is linked here (I originally wrote it for the Clover blog) and there is also a printable version in the shop that includes the Pumpkin and Tree versions.

Patchwork Pumpkin and Table Runner

I love this Pumpkin pillow and table runner because it can be so easily adapted to be more fall-themed, or more Halloween, depending on the fabrics you use. This tutorial can be found on Amy Smart's blog Diary of a Quilter

Ghostly Greetings Table Runner

This little ghost tries to scare everyone with his "Boo!" but he really is too cute to be scary :-) The table runner is a firm favourite in our family's rotation, and usually spends all of October on the dining table.

The pattern uses my beginner-friendly alphabet which makes this a fun and quick project. It's available here in my pattern shop.

Apple FPP Block

Here's another apple quilt block, but this time it's foundation paper pieced for some extra roundness. This block would also look great combined with some fall leaf and sunflower blocks in a table runner or wall hanging.

Sunflower Quilt Block

This free tutorial from The Crafty Quilter uses a fun piecing trick to the get the sunflower petals. It's all traditionally pieced with an interesting 3D effect. You can find the tutorial here. https://thecraftyquilter.com/2023/06/free-garden-sunflower-quilt-block-pattern/

Mushroom FPP Blocks

Mushrooms have always been a symbol of fall for me, and I love going on walks through the forest in the fall and discovering all the different shapes and colours of mushrooms growing among the leaves.

These FPP shrooms come in either a single mushroom version, or a little arrangement of 3 mushrooms. Use one or both for a table runner, fall inspired quilt, or some fun cushions for the couch.

Quick Fall or Halloween Bunting

A quick and easy way to decorate for the season is to make a string of bunting. Whether you use fall colours or Halloween novelty fabrics, you can quickly decorate a room this way, and bunting is fast and easy to make. Amy Smart has a tutorial here on Diary of a Quilter that uses fabrics cut into triangles. If you'd rather start with squares and don't want to bother cutting triangles first, this tutorial has you covered.

Fall Leaves Quilt

This Fall Leaves quilt by Cluck Cluck Sew is such a lovely take on the traditional leaf quilt block. You can find the pattern here.

I Love Cats Quilt

I love this cat pattern by Jedi Craft Girl. Both the original with the hearts, and the pumpkin version are super cute, and look like they're fairly quick to make.

Hocuspocus Quilt

This quilt by Corinne Sovey is one of my all-time favourite Halloween designs. I have yet to make it myself, but I love the modern look of it, and the many different colouring options for it.
