I’m Monika, the designer and colour enthusiast behind Penny Spool Quilts.
If you love bright designs and modern quilts, you’ve come to the right place! You’ll find modern quilt inspiration, tutorials, and fuss-free quilt patterns to build your quilting confidence, one (paper) piece at a time.
My quilting journey started a bit over 20 years ago, when I was at Uni, with traditional patterns done the traditional way. And while I call myself a modern quilter now, I still like using traditional blocks and designs and tweaking them to suit my taste for modern fabrics, colours, and bold shapes.
I'm a geographer turned quilt designer, with a teaching degree in my back pocket, so it was only natural that I would eventually want to share my love of modern quilting with the world. So a few years ago I began to write quilt patterns. First it was just a few patterns for Make Modern magazine, and then it became an Etsy shop, and then I had some more designs published both in Make Modern and Love Patchwork & Quilting while designing some just for the shop, and now here we are.
My patterns are fun, bright, and often fairly quick quilts, with a nod to tradition but most definitely modern.
I'd like to invite you to follow me on Instagram or Facebook, and to sign up to get my newsletter with all the updates from the studio, new blog posts and behind the scenes info. And there’s a free table runner pattern to try out in your first email, too.
PS: Curious about where "Penny Spool" came from? It's from the first line of the children's song "Pop! goes the weasel"
“A penny for a spool of thread,
a penny for a needle,
that’s the way the money goes,
pop! goes the weasel.”
