Line Dance - The Zen Chic One

I finally finished up the Line Dance quilt I made during our Summer Sew-Along in 2024!

All it needed was binding, but you know how it goes with some quilts. And it's not even that I don't like attaching binding, but I made the mistake of not buying the binding fabric when I got the rest of the fabrics for the quilt top, so it took me a while to find the perfect match. See below...

Yep, I found a store that still had the same fabric collection in stock, so I was able to get more of the yellow to bind it. But more about fabric below. Let's talk about the pattern first.

Line Dance Quilt Pattern

Line Dance is an intermediate quilt pattern that I originally created for Love Patchwork & Quilting. It was even the cover quilt of that issue, which was definitely a thrill to find that out.

The original only had the one colourway shown in the magazine, but now that it's out as a standalone pattern, I've expanded it to 3 colourways, and 4 sizes.

The colour options:

  • Two-colour, which means all the blocks use the same two colours for the ribbons, plus a background
  • Loops, where every closed loop of ribbons is one colour
  • and Scrappy, which has every block in different fabrics, as the name implies

Included sizes:

  • Baby at 36" x 36"
  • Small Throw at 54" x 72"
  • Large Throw (the original square one) at 72" x 72"
  • Twin at 72" x 90"

For the Sew-Along, I had made the Small Throw in the Loops colourway.

Zen Chic Flirtation fabric collection

I actually used all fabrics (except backing) from the same collection for this quilt, called Flirtation by Zen Chic for Moda. Most of my quilts are fabrics pulls I make up, but this is such a gorgeous collection I didn't want to mess with it. I'm just sad I couldn't use every print, but I only needed 6, plus the background.

I used the two green fabrics and the yellow one for the three full loops, and the light, medium and dark blue each for the partial loops around the outside of the quilt. And the background is this gorgeous pale grey pebble print with some gold flecks. Actually, there are gold flecks and accents in all the prints.

I also ended up using the same yellow pebble print for the binding. Thankfully, some stores still have some of this collection even two years later, because I decided on the binding fabric just this year and was able to buy some still. Along with another yard of the dark blue fabric, that I may just pet and never cut into now ;-)

The backing is a soft and cuddly yellow flannel from Quilter's Choice, called Betula. It was available as a wideback and I didn't want to piece the backing, so this worked out perfectly.

Quilting Design

I sent this quilt out to be longarmed by Heather of Red Willow Quilts. She actually finished it last summer, but it sat in my studio until I finally decided on binding fabric earlier this year.

As we were deciding on the quilting design, this Boxtrot pantograph by Urban Elementz jumped out because of how it echoes the intertwining loops of the Line Dance quilt pattern. It was the perfect choice for this quilt, and I love how it echoes the straight lines without looking too rigid.

Line Dance Sew-Along

As I mentioned above, this was the quilt I made for the Sew-Along I hosted in the summer of 2024. While that is definitely over now, I've now set it up as an on-demand sew-along. Meaning, you can sign up for it, and get all the emails with the prompts and blog posts once a week, as if you were participating in the live sew-along. You'll get all my top tips to successfully make this quilt, but on your own time.

If you're interested, hop on over to the intro blog post and sign up for the weekly emails there! Happy quilting!
