Victorian Tiles - the Breeze version

Victorian Tiles - the Breeze version

Have you ever seen those tiled entries and hallways in Victorian homes? I love those geometric floor tiles and have been wanting to make a quilt with a design inspired by them for a long time. I finally have ;-)

Victorian Tiles is published in Make Modern magazine's issue 35, which hit the virtual newsstands as I am writing this post.

Victorian Tiles Quilt Pattern by Penny Spool Quilts - magazine pattern cover page with sample quilt in pink and blues draped over big rock

This pattern is a repeat block design that's set on point. It's a simple block to construct and the pattern includes instructions for time-saving techniques such as 4-at-a-time flying geese.

The fabrics used in this sample are from the Breeze collection by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic for Moda. Having the tone-on-tone prints adds interest up close, but lets the primary and secondary patterns shine without distraction.

Because this design has secondary patterns, it lends itself to all sorts of colour play with solids and near-solid fabrics to see which patterns pop. And even fussy-cutting an adorable print for the blue center squares is an option.

It was quilted by Sharyn of Huntley Quilting Studio in one of my favourite simple, loose swirl patterns. It gives the quilt a lovely texture without distracting from the piecing.

I asked my son to help me by holding the quilt, he's just tall enough and has a big enough "wing span" to hold up this 53" x 53" quilt, but he was complaining about the itchy grass afterwards :-)

Victorian Tiles is available in Make Modern Issue 35. You can purchase individual issues, or get subscriptions for 6 months, 12 months or their fabulous All Access Subscription, which includes literally everything they've ever published (which means my previously published patterns are all in there, too).
