September 2026 Quilt Colour Inspiration

Whether I'm ready or not, autumn is here and one of the best things about living in Eastern Ontario is getting to see the leaves change colour. The saturated greens of summer make way for a riot of yellows, oranges and reds that positively glow when the sun is shining.

So, of course I had to pick an image of fall leaves for this month's inspiration.

Fabric swatches for September 2026

Having colours on the screen as inspiration is one thing, but as quilters we need to be able to find them in fabric collections as well. I'm using the QuiltySolid app to put together fabric collections of some common solids brands. Not all brands have the same variety of shades of every colour, so you'll see some variance in the brands I list here depending on the current palette.

  • Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton: Ivy, Limelight, Corn Yellow, Creamsicle, Cardinal
  • Northcott Colorworks: Green Pepper, Ginko, Saffron, Grapefruit, Crimson
  • Moda Bella Solids: Evergreen, Straw, Chrome, Coral, Garnet
  • Andover Fabrics Century Solids: Jalapeno, Sulphur, Saffron, Peach, Redwood
  • Art Gallery PURE Solids: Asparagus, Lemon Tart, Banana Cream, Grapefruit, Sedona
  • HEX codes, to look up other brands: #7D8845, #BFAF36, #F0B247, #ED8762, #B12F48

Always check these in person, though. The app gives the closest colours by hue, saturation, and value, to the HEX code entered, but they may not look quite right together in person. Substituting a different shade for one of the fabrics might work better.

Mockups of real quilt patterns

Fall colours make such gorgeous and cozy quilts, I was really looking forward to playing with this colour palette to see what my own quilt patterns would look like.

My first try was Spinning Top, which I love for its simplicity. I tried out two versions, one with the green in the center, and on with the red. I just took the colours as they were arranged in the inspiration photo above, going from green to yellow to red. While I love both of these, I think the one with the red in the center reads just a tad more autumn-y than the green center. What do you think?
For my second one, I went with this quilt's fraternal twin, Raise The Bar. Here I only did the first arrangement, with the green in the center, but since this one has a short center bar, the yellow and reds are still more prominent, giving this the kind of fall vibe I'm looking for.
I've been trying to make a point of incorporating block patterns into these inspiration posts as well, and not just sticking to "big quilt" patterns. The blocks are fun to make and can be used on their own (think couch pillow or tote), for things like table runners, minis, or make them as large as you want by just adding more blocks. So I feel like highlighting them in these posts helps to visualize what can be done with them.
Here I tried out my Connections block. This was originally based on a subway map, and then morphed into this fun geometric block that connects from block to block (you'll have to rotate them, though). I started out with the colours from the palette, but when I got to the large quilt, the dark green and coral didn't look quite right anymore, so I switched them out for the light green and a more orange shade.
Here's the block by itself:
This is four blocks put together, each one rotated an extra quarter turn clockwise to make them connect in the center:
And here is where I switched colours because they didn't give me that fall vibe anymore that I was going for. This is four sets of four blocks.
And I saved my favourite fall quilt for last. Confetti is technically a scrap quilt, but it could easily be done with a bunch of solids like this. Just put your HSTs and four-patch units together randomly from these colours and you'll get the coziest fall quilt. Doesn't it look a bit like a pile of leaves that have fallen and been raked together? Now it just needs some flannel and I'll never come out from under it :-)
I did add an extra shade of red because it was a little too green and yellow overall.
What do you think? Would you try out this colour palette in a future quilt? Pin the image below to your inspiration file!
