Flocks of Colour Quilt Pattern

This fun rainbow splash of colour is my first ever published pattern, Flocks of Colour. It was first published in Make Modern magazine's issue 19 and is the pattern that started it all, so to speak.

Update: This pattern has now been updated to include multiple sizes and colourways, and is also available as a printed pattern booklet. The original is still available in Make Modern issue 19 here (affiliate link).

I used a rainbow of prints for the flying geese, and because I love bold pops of colour, I placed them on a dark blue background for maximum impact. This quilt is a lovely quick project that can easily be scaled up or down to even more sizes by a more advanced quilter, but the pattern includes instructions for both baby and throw sizes to get you started.

As you can see from these pictures, it also works well in many different colourways. I love this soft pastel version by Victoria that instantly turns this fun and bright baby quilt into a feminine throw for a modern home.

And I'm a big fan of using the scraps from making a quilt top for the backing. Isn't this strip of leftover geese wonderful? It saves fabric, is done quite quickly and you've got yourself a reversible quilt.

Katy made this version of the throw size as a donation for Victoria's Quilts, who are always looking for more manly quilts. I love how she's split the background fabric into three shades of grey and used the colour of the geese to contrast with the background.

How wonderful would an ombre range of geese look? Or even a bold two-tone like burnt orange on taupe or mustard on grey? So many ideas, so little time ;-)
